Rentals at Davidson Violins

Davidson Violins rents violins, violas, cellos and basses. Our rentals come from several workshops and are tested, played and adjusted for best playing experience.  A dedicated shop like ours is staffed by experts in the field - professional violin, viola, cello and bass players, instrument makers and trained repairmen and women.  Far from being an expensive boutique, our shop is often said to be the friendliest, lowest priced, most enjoyable in-store experience in the region.  Our rental rates are the same as our competition with a higher level of service, quality and expertise.  In a hurry?  Use our rental reservation form below.  Need more information?  Come by the shop or call and ask all of your questions.  We are always happy to help students explore the wonderful world of bowed strings.

Our business is built around long term investment in player success.  When it comes to our rental instruments our formula is simple: if the instrument plays and sounds better, the student is more likely to be successful and we will serve them for the long haul . So rather than offer a mediocre rental that is more likely to return to us quickly we give students great instruments which serve the main goal – a better chance at succeeding.  We have seen consistently that dropout rates in school orchestra programs and private studios are lower with students who use our instruments.

Sizing

Sizing an instrument for a student is best done by an instructor or violin retailer. These are a few general guidelines to assist you in figuring the correct size:

Violin: The student should be able to wrap his or her left hand around the scroll with the instrument in playing position. There should be only a slight bend in the elbow. A significant bend in the elbow requires the next size up. Over extension of the elbow means the instrument is too big.

This is a general suggestion – a student with exceptionally small hands, for example, may need a smaller instrument even if the scroll test is correct.

Viola: Violas have several additional considerations to the violin sizing method above. Full size violas are at least 15 inches long on the back, which is larger than the full size violin at approximately 14 inches. Most musicians aim for a 16 inch full size viola, though the range of “full size” violas is approximately 15-17.5 inches.

This larger size is the only way the viola can adequately produce a full tone on the low C string with a mellow, alto voiced character. Generally we size violas slightly larger than violins for two reasons. First, the student will probably always be playing a viola as large as they can comfortably manage, and secondly the larger it is the better the lower strings sound. We highly recommend having an expert size your viola student.

Cello: It is especially important to choose a good quality cello and make sure it is not too large for the student to avoid hand cramping due to the size and thickness of the strings. Have the child sit so that the knees are at a ninety degree angle.

The instrument should rest so the top part of the cello body rests in the middle of the chest, and the left knee rests in the curve below the lower bout corner. The C string peg should be near the left ear. Make sure the neck is a few inches away from the shoulder, and the left hand can reach both ends of the fingerboard easily.

Rental cost

Violin and viola outfits are $28 per month, with $6 additional for damage insurance

Cello outfits are $49 per month, with $9 additional for damage insurance

Bass outfits are $60 per month, with $14.99 additional for damage insurance. Please call for bass availability.

Equity

50% of each month’s rental fee accumulates as equity towards purchase (damage insurance and tax do not). Rental equity can be used to purchase any instrument at Davidson Violins, not just your rental, allowing you to choose between your rental, and new or seasoned instruments according to your needs. Although we do not offer 100% of the rental fee towards purchase, we do charge market prices for our instruments, rental or otherwise.

Most “rent to own” programs include artificially high buyout prices; the only way for you to know if the price is fair is to compare. If you have a rental from another retailer that you are “renting to own”, be sure to bring it to our shop and compare to other instruments in its price range before you buy it.
