Remote Teaching and Learning is Fun!

"One of my amazing little students working with me on zoom! He’s 4 and doing great with online lessons!" - Rebecca Ray, Studio Director at Davidson Violins

We love receiving photos and vids like these from our parents! Send yours to:

Henry prepping for his online lesson with a mini-concert for his favorite stuffed animals at home! A new kind of audience :)

This is Charlotte. She is 4 years old and just started taking remote lessons last Friday! In her first lesson, she learned all about the parts of her violin, how to set her violin in rest position and playing position, and of course, how to take a proper stage bow with her violin! Her smile is contagious and she is excited to learn more in her lesson this week!

Working from Home?

Shop Manager Jason Bamford found the ways to make it work! (Though Mrs. Bamford might have a couple issues! Lol)  In his 'home shop' Jason focuses on repairs to the high string instruments and bow rehairing!  If there is a shop tool required for any given repair, both Jason and Ben reside nearby to get anything needed!

Concierge Service Keeps Everyone Playing!

Between lessons, our Cello Teacher Adam Sullivan is helping everyone to keep playing by shuttling repairs  from customer homes to the home workshops of our Luthier staff, Jason Bamford and Ben Williams, and back to their owners.  Based in Rock Hill, SC, Adam is able to service deliveries to our client base on the south side of Charlotte, while Rachel Atkinson, based in Davidson NC covers the areas north of the city!

Notable Projects
This precious jewel of a cello recently visited the shop for a new bridge and some minor seam re-gluing. While Ben Williams, our 'low strings' specialist is no stranger to very old instruments, having specialized in 19th-century restorations and repairs during his years working in Las Vegas and San Francisco, this is the oldest cello he's had the privilege of working on.  Made in 1758 Mittenwald Germany, the tag indicates that it was made in the shops of Georgius Wornle, though we have not fully verified that Mr. Wornle made this one personally.  But all the tool marks and other indications certainly confirm it's 18th-century vintage.
Because the bridge feet must fit the top of the cello perfectly, this instrument with its unique top profile, posed a particular challenge. Most modern cellos you see are carved with a consistent arc over the top, and the bridge feet are carved with a matching concave profile for a perfect fit. This cello, however was carved differently -  this top has a fairly steep arc rising from the edges which transitions into the cello top as a nearly-flat 'plateau.'  Over 261 years under string tension though, this plateau top has deformed over the bass bar to the point that the bass-side bridge foot must be carved in this undulating form, and 'chalk-fitted' to the top.  The treble bridge foot, near the sound post was a far more conventional fit, though a bit off the usual height and angle, and still requiring a fine chalk-fitting.

With the new bridge and the routine seam re-gluing done, we documented every measurement of this fine specimen of masterful 18th-century cello making, and returned it to a very happy owner!
Contact Jason@DavidsonViolins.com to schedule your instrument for the expert care it needs - Everything from routine bow rehairing, to simple setups & adjustments, to broken necks and extensive open-body repairs, ours is the finest and most experienced shop in the area.
